Membranes : technologies with high stakes

Physical barriers that separate inorganic, organic, viral or bacterial contaminants, membranes provide a high-level guarantee against any form of water contamination.

Considered as “dominant technologies” in developed countries sincd the 90s, they have also become a major development issue for Southern Hemisphere countries with appropriate support, particularly in the areas of Training and Research. It is on this priority objective that the UNESCO SIMEV Chair was created.

Membranes & renewable energies

A good number of Southern Hemisphere countries are particularly rich in renewable energies, such as solar, wind, marine, etc.

Coupled with the use of these renewable energies, membrane technologies make it possible to provide a realistic solution to the most important issues:

  • access to quality water and therefore health improvement
  • preservation of the resource through the implementation of treatment, recycling and reuse processes (eg irrigation)

The Chair is particularly supporting projects coupling membrane technologies and renewable energies.

Nature as the first source of inspiration

SIMEV is now opening up to biomimicry, that is to say to the study of processes-procedures directly inspired by nature. Articificial membranes have the model of biological membranes. Idriss Aberkane, a scientist and researcher in the neurosciences, ambassador of the Unesco-Unitwin Complex Digital Systems Campus, is also convinced by the interest of biomimicry for the creation of values.

Membrane architectures created on the model of living systems specific to Southern Hemisphere countries, particularly to carry out water transfers with minimal energy expenditure, should thus constitute an original study subject for SIMEV and open on new profitable actions for all.

The Chair follows current events & lists the latest publications on membrane technology applications in developing countries, in Africa and Asia in particular.
