” Water, peace and security are inextricably linked.”
António Guterres, UN Secretary-General.
The UNESCO SIMEV Chair will be part of the Geneva Peace Week on Friday November 6 from 2 p.m. to 3.15 p.m. with a plenary session on the theme: “Beyond water: science diplomacy for local conflict prevention”.
Water : source of conflict, source of peace
At the heart of all debates and the balance of our humanity, water is a source of conflict when it could be a source of peace.
By sharing its good practices and methodology with the international community in charge of peace building, SIMEV wishes to bring its experience and further enrich thinking on new approaches to conflict prevention by integrating scientific organizations that turn to sciencific diplomacy.
This plenary session thus brings together the experiences of :
- the UNESCO Chair in Hydropolitics established at the University of Geneva
- CLINGENDAEL – The Netherlands Institute of International Relations, The Hague
- Montpellier UNESCO International Water Centre – ICIReWaRD & Research Institute for Water and Environment
- Montpellier University of Excellence – Pôle de recherche Chimie
How SIMEV projects contribute to conflict prevention
The Chair will present its work carried out in Morocco and Senegal. The development and implementation of pilots for access to drinking water and renewable energies makes it possible to respond to very strong societal demands relating to health, education, better living … and thus helps in the prevention of new conflicts.
